Friday, September 30th is “Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters”. On this day, we honour those survivors of Canada's Indian Residential School System and commemorate the many who never made it home.
Phyllis Webstad, the inspiration for this event, wore her brand new orange shirt on the first day attended the Mission School. It was taken from her and replaced with a school uniform. She never got it back and always associated orange with her memories of how the feelings of the children who attended these schools didn’t matter. Now, it has a more positive meaning.
Our students have heard this and other information about Orange Shirt Day and are being asked to wear something orange to participate (this can be an orange t-shirt or another piece of orange clothing). We will have small “pin-on” orange t-shirts in case they don’t have anything orange to wear.
